This course provides an overview of how a “Fish Camp” owner/operator, looking to retire, explored the most viable plan for his property. For over 50 years, he had run an “Old Florida” fisherman’s retreat located on a 5,850-acre spring-fed lake in north central Florida. Unsurprisingly, he had become very attached to the Camp and, even more so, to his fishin’ buddies. Some of the regulars had been fishing at his place since his father first opened the Camp in 1949. He had mixed emotions about the fate of the camp. Part of him wanted to sell the business to someone who would carry on as he had done for his father. He wanted his longtime customers, his fishing buddies, to not miss out on an experience they had come to love. Another part of him was concerned about being self-sufficient. He hated the thought of relying on his children. He felt the need to maximize the dollars he could make on the sale to support himself during retirement. This course explores the design options proposed by an Architect who had a relationship with the owner and how he was able to develop the most viable plan. He had a vested interest, he was one of Charlie’s (the owner) fishing buddies. He would try to weight both issues being considered by his client – leaving a legacy and maximizing profit, as he explored the design options.
