Building for Tomorrow: Whole Building Life Cycle Design and Lasting Value

Building for Tomorrow: Whole Building Life Cycle Design and Lasting Value

2 HSW Credit Hours

This continuing education course equips architects with practical tools to evaluate and communicate the long-term financial, environmental, and performance impacts of design decisions. Moving beyond first cost, the course introduces a comprehensive approach tolife cycle costing (LCC) by integrating building performance, durability, energy use, and maintenance into a unified decision-making framework.

Participants will examine how material selection, system design, and early planning strategies influence total cost of ownership, occupant well-being, and long-term building resilience. Through real-world case studies and applied methodologies, the course demonstrates how architects can lead value-based conversations with clients and stakeholders—aligning high-performance design with economic and environmental goals.

The course emphasizes the architect’s role in delivering buildings that are not only cost-effective at completion, but also sustainable, durable, and adaptable over time.
