Construction Documentation and Administration: From Drawing Set to Occupied Building

Construction Documentation and Administration: From Drawing Set to Occupied Building

2 HR LU Continuing Education Course

Course Description

The construction documents are where architecture stops being an idea and starts being an instruction — and construction administration is where those instructions meet a real site, a real schedule, and a real contractor. Together they are the delivery system for every health, safety, and welfare decision made during design: a fire-rated wall that was designed correctly but documented ambiguously, or a critical submittal reviewed carelessly, fails the occupants just as surely as a design error would.

This 2-hour course treats documentation and administration as one continuous discipline. You’ll work through the anatomy and internal logic of a construction document set; specifications and the project manual (MasterFormat, the three-part section, and the four specifying methods); cross-discipline coordination and the QC passes that catch conflicts before bidding; the contract triangle formed by the owner-architect and owner-contractor agreements and the architect’s actual authority within it; bidding-phase discipline; submittal and shop drawing review — what the review is and is not; the four change instruments (RFI, ASI, CCD, change order) and when each applies; and the construction-phase duties of site observation, payment certification, substantial completion, and closeout. A case study and working checklist convert the material into office procedure.

The content draws on AIA contract document guidance, CSI standards, and published professional-practice literature. It addresses project development and documentation, and construction and evaluation — topic areas consistent with AIA’s published HSW criteria. Confirm credit eligibility with your state board and AIA/CES provider status before claiming credit.
