Architect as Builder
2 HSW Credit Hours
This course takes a look at homes that were designed and built by an Architect. Each home has some unique factors that were considered. Some are new homes, others are extensive remodels. But in all cases, a key lesson was learned; the design was being shaped much more by in-field decisions than the initial drawings. The Architect was beginning to master the way buildings were put together, thinking constructability. When the Architect prepares a set of construction documents that will be bid by several contractors and built usually by the low bidder, the drawings must be very complete with lots of details. But, at least from one Architect’s perspective, if the project is being delivered in a “design/build” format, the drawings can be more of a general guide, a “permit set”, and the assembly process can be more fluid.
