Course Description
This course reviews many of the requirements in the current editions of the ADA Standards issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). The instructional content was developed by the U.S. Access Board in cooperation with DOJ and DOT. In addition to explaining the requirements of the standards, the Guide content included in this course also provides clearly labeled recommendations for best practices that exceed the minimum requirements and are thus optional to follow.
Learning Objectives
Objective 1
Learn About the DOJ updated ADA Standards issued in 2010, referred to as the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. These standards replace the original ADA Standards DOJ issued in 1991 and became mandatory for newly constructed and altered facilities as of March 15, 2012.
Objective 2
Review the ADA Standards Guide that covers both the current DOJ and DOT ADA Standards which are very similar. The Guide, used in this course, explains the requirements of both standards.
Objective 3
Gain knowledge of best practices that exceed the minimum requirements, not required but recommended, by studying the Guide to the ADA Standards, an important resource that includes illustrations that are clearly labeled recommendations.
Objective 4
Improve your understanding of the ADA Standards through an illustrated overview of key ADA requirements including; Scoping Requirements, Facility’s Building Blocks, Accessibility Routes, and General Site and Building Elements.
