ADA Accessible Design Routes
2 HSW Credit Hours
This course will concentrate on Chapter 4: Accessibility Routes of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. The first section will focus on Compliance, presenting the exact language and illustrations included in the Federal 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design Document. In addition to the Compliance requirements, the course will include examples, both bad and good, of how to access accommodations impact the aesthetics of a project.
The course will primarily feature creative designs that address changes in elevation. Some of the examples include ramps that are integral to the building’s design. Others will illustrate ramps or lifts that are not particularly attractive, looking like they were an afterthought. The goal of the course is to review the mandatory requirements of the law but also to take a look at various design solutions and how they address the challenge of providing Accessibility Routes that both work and “fit” the Architects Design solution.
